This workshop is an introduction to the world of “Eco Dyeing”: using plants and natural materials to create lovely surface plant designs on cloth. Learn along with Alice (also fairly new to the practice of natural dye)! We’ll explore the use of local plants, mordants (to fix and manipulate colors) on cotton and silk cloth. Materials are provided — you will receive an email before class with a list of optional plant materials to collect and bring with you. Feel free to nab some leaves, flowers, and botanical materials (should be relatively flat, but doesn't need to be perfectly flat). This is an experiment, so bring what you can forage from around you--any plant material is worth a try! Some of the materials that print well on cloth are: Eucalyptus Oak and Maple leaves (you can even use ones left on the ground from last fall) Cosmos flowers Bidens Coreopsis Sweetgum Japanese Maple Vitex Sumac If you pick these fresh you can keep in a jar of water until class time. Enjoy a 20% household discount for the second person registered and beyond! All are welcome—come as you are, no experience needed.
