Fly fishing 101 is a fast paced beginning class. 7 sessions cover everything from the basic “how to set up your first rod and reel” to knot tying; an introduction to entomology—and how that affects fly patterns—and, of course, casting lessons. Sessions include field trips for those things that can’t be learned in the classroom so set aside a weekend or two! The goal? Learn the skills that allow 10% of anglers to catch 90% of the fish! Schedule: Classroom Sessions (AC 237) June 18, June 25, July 2, July 16 – 7:10–9:00 PM Field Trips / Labs (Off-Campus) June 28 – 9:00–11:00 AM (Civic Center) July 12 – 9 AM–2 PM (Truckee) July 26 – 9 AM–2 PM (Lewiston, CA) Class is limited to 14 students. Some equipment will be available for use on campus. Otherwise, students will need to provide their own gear for field trips. Recommendations, sources and a supply list will be discussed in the first session. Field trips may involve a significant amount of travel and students will have to make all their own travel arrangements. David Dempsey, a native Californian and former guide, has traveled the world fly fishing. He has taught fly fishing and fly tying for over 30 years and was the founding president of the Mt Tamalpais Fly Fishers.
